Google Business Profile optimization: what moves the map pack and what does not

Google says local results turn on relevance, distance and prominence. In practice, four things move map pack placement: primary category, proximity, reviews, and consistency of business information. Category is the most underestimated and proximity is the one you cannot change. Most of the rest, including posts and photo volume, are conversion features worth doing for other reasons.

One structural fact applies to all local service search. We measured 18 local service results pages across Canada and the United States: 17 of 18 led with a map pack, and zero returned an AI Overview. So the organic click below the map is still available here, unlike categories where a generated answer takes it. The data is published here.

What actually moves placement

Ranked by influence, and whether you control it
Primary category
High influence. Fully in your control. Most underestimated
Proximity to the searcher
High influence. Not in your control at all
Review volume and recency
High influence. Slow but fully earnable
Information consistency
Moderate. Hygiene with a ceiling, but the ceiling is real

Primary category deserves the attention it rarely gets. It tells Google what kind of business you are, which shapes the searches the profile is considered relevant for. A business sitting in an adjacent or broader category is competing with one hand tied, and in our experience profile completeness does not make up for it. This is worth auditing against the categories that competitors appearing above you have chosen.

The factor you cannot fix

Proximity weighs heavily and is entirely outside your control. A business in one part of a city will struggle to appear for searches made across town regardless of how strong the profile is.

That is not a failure of the work, it is a property of the format, and knowing it early is what stops money being spent on an outcome that was never available. If the map pack is not realistically reachable for the searches that matter to you, the organic listing beneath it becomes the target, and that is a content and authority problem instead.

What is conversion, not ranking

Posts, photos, product listings and attributes are worth maintaining, but for what they do once someone sees the profile rather than for whether they see it. They influence choice, not placement.

This distinction matters because these are the items most often sold as a monthly ranking service. Doing them is fine. Being told they will move placement is not accurate.

What does nothing, or worse

Keyword stuffing the business name. It can work briefly, but Google’s guidelines say unnecessary information in a business name is not permitted and could result in suspension of the profile. The trade is bad on its own terms.

Bulk citation submissions as an ongoing service. Consistency of business information genuinely matters, but it is a fix with an end point, not a monthly channel. Once information is consistent, submitting more of it does nothing.

Review gating. Filtering who gets asked so only happy customers are prompted is prohibited under Google’s review content policy, which bans selectively soliciting positive reviews. Ask everyone, and fix the reason unhappy customers are unhappy.

For how this fits alongside conventional ranking work, the local SEO breakdown covers the three surfaces, and the reviews piece deals with the part that takes longest.

The rules that get profiles suspended

Ranking advice is pointless if the profile disappears. Google’s guidelines for representing your business are long, and most of them are common sense. These are the lines worth checking against your own profile today.

Check your profile against these
Name
Your real-world name as used on signage, website and stationery. No taglines, hours, phone numbers or service keywords
Address
A virtual office is not eligible. A co-working desk only counts with clear signage, staff on site and customers received during business hours
Locations
One profile per location, whether in one account or several
Phone
A number under the business’s direct control, local where possible, never a premium-rate line
Links
No URLs or numbers that redirect people to someone else’s landing page
Category edits
A change can trigger re-verification, so make it deliberately

The last one surprises people. Google’s category help page says that if you add or edit a category, “you might be asked to verify your business again.” Our view: still fix a wrong primary category, because it caps what you can rank for. Do it once, after checking what the businesses above you use, not as a weekly experiment.

If your profile gets suspended

Do not create a new profile. Google’s suspension help page is explicit: “Do not create a new Business Profile for the same business while your appeal is under review.” Fix whatever broke the guidelines first, then use the appeals tool, which shows the restricted profile, the reason and a link to the policy that was violated.

Google highly recommends adding evidence, and lists what helps: official business registration, a business licence, tax certificates, and utility bills for electricity, phone, water or internet. Check that the name and address on every document match the profile. Have the files ready before you start, because once the evidence form is open you have 60 minutes to submit it or it will not be attached. If the appeal is denied, Google may allow one additional review with evidence you did not include the first time.

That is the real argument for running the profile clean. The name, address and category that match your signage and your registration are exactly what you will have to prove if anything goes wrong.

A 20-minute Maps audit

Google says “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.” So the work is making the profile accurate, complete and well known. The same page names two inputs to prominence: how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. Run this check once a quarter.

Quarterly profile check
Verified
Google says verification makes the profile more likely to show up in search results
Primary category
The most specific option on the list, like Nail salon instead of Salon
Additional categories
A few that describe real parts of the business, not one per product or service
Hours
Regular hours plus special hours set before every holiday
Address or service area
Matches how customers actually reach you
Reviews
Every recent review read, and the ones that raise a question answered
Links
Local associations, suppliers and partners that mention you and link to your site

The holiday line costs nothing and gets skipped. Google suggests confirming your hours for official holidays even when they match your regular hours, which tells searchers the listing is current. Set them before the holiday, not after a customer finds a locked door.

Questions

What actually affects Google Business Profile ranking?

Primary category, proximity to the searcher, review volume and recency, and consistency of business information across the web. Category choice is the single most underestimated of these, because the wrong primary category caps what you can appear for regardless of everything else.

How important is the primary category?

More than almost anything else you control. It tells Google what kind of business you are, which shapes the searches you are considered relevant for. In our experience a profile in a broader or adjacent category underperforms against a competitor in the exact one, however complete the rest of the profile is.

Do posts on a Business Profile help ranking?

They are best treated as a conversion and freshness feature rather than a ranking lever. They can influence whether someone chooses you once you appear, which is worth doing, but they are not the reason a profile places in the map pack.

How much does proximity matter?

A great deal, and it is the factor you cannot change. A business will struggle to appear for searches across a city regardless of profile quality. Recognising this early determines whether the map pack is realistically a channel for you at all.

Does keyword stuffing the business name work?

It can produce a short-term effect and it violates the guidelines, which makes it a suspension risk. Given that a suspension removes the profile entirely, the risk-to-reward is poor even setting the ethics aside.

How do reviews affect placement?

Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. In our view recency matters too, and both are best judged relative to the other businesses appearing for the same search rather than against an absolute number. A steady flow reads differently from a large count that stopped two years ago.

Can you pay Google to rank higher on Google Maps?

No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads are a separate product: they buy an ad placement, not a better position for your regular listing, which comes down to relevance, distance and prominence.

Why did my Google Business Profile get suspended?

Google suspends or disables profiles that do not follow its guidelines. Breaks that can cause it include extra keywords in the business name, a virtual office address, or more than one profile for the same location. Fix the issue, then appeal through the Business Profile appeals tool with evidence such as a business licence or utility bill that matches the profile name and address. Do not create a new profile while the appeal is under review.

Will changing my Google Business Profile category affect my ranking?

It can. Google says the categories you select affect your local ranking, and editing a category can also trigger a request to verify the business again. In our view, pick the most specific accurate primary category after checking what the businesses above you use, then change it once rather than repeatedly.
